From My Heart.....: The Crumbling Pedestal....

In her lovely post, Teresa Lee ponders the dangers of being on a pedestal. Pedestals crumble and people fall off. As Teresa supposes, we’ve all been disappointed by folks we had put on a pedestal, only to see them fall off. And we surely don’t want to be placed on one by others, and having to live up to the predicates we probably hardly deserve.

I stared for hours at the mountains of Alaska, thoughts dripping from my mind like tears from eyes focused on the brow of pine trees on the shore. And whenever I had the chance, I wandered off the ship, roamed the streets of Seward, Sitka, Ketchikan. In Juneau I climbed Gold Hill until the trees dropped off the trail like a dress undone at the shoulders and I stared out of the world, and the barren slopes lay ahead toward the summit. In the empty distance I could see an ornamental wooden structure of some sort, standing austere and alone. Time and strength depleted, I turned back to the trees and to the ship.

After negotiating a small protuberance in the downslope, I see a large wooden sign that says simply, ALASKA. I pull over and get out and walk toward the sign and put my hand on it. "Hello, my good friend," I say as I peer into the green valley and cold air washes wet along my face.
